About The Groundworks

Introducing The Groundworks Restaurant feels a bit like letting you in on a local secret, even though plenty of people already swear by it. The Groundworks sits right in the heart of Hitchin at 1 Churchyard, Hitchin SG5 1HR, United Kingdom, and it carries the relaxed, welcoming energy you hope for when you step into a great cafe. From the moment you arrive, the atmosphere is easygoing and social, making it just as suitable for a quiet coffee break as it is for a casual catch-up with friends. There is outdoor seating for those who like to watch the town go by, while inside feels warm and comfortable without trying too hard. What really stands out about The Groundworks is how naturally it fits into your day. You can pop in for a quick bite, settle down for a proper dine-in experience, or grab something tasty to go if you are on the move. Coffee plays a big role here, and it is treated with care, which regulars definitely appreciate. Alongside that, the menu leans into fresh, thoughtful food, with healthy options that do not feel boring or restrictive. Vegan and vegetarian choices are clearly part of the conversation, not an afterthought, and the small plates make it easy to sample a few different flavours without committing to one big dish. As the day rolls on, alcohol and wine come into play, shifting the mood from daytime cafe to relaxed evening spot without losing that friendly feel. The Groundworks manages to balance quality and comfort in a way that feels natural rather than forced, which is probably why it appeals to such a broad mix of locals and visitors. Whether you are meeting someone new, working through ideas with a laptop nearby, or simply enjoying good food and drink in a pleasant setting, this is the kind of place that quietly earns a spot in your regular rotation.

The food is really good. I had the Groundworks breakfast and asked to replace the mushroom by another egg. My partner had the avocado on toast with two poached eggs. We both had coffee also. The food was nice but this place is slightly more expensive than the usual and I didn't felt it was worth the extra price. We also had a visit to the bathroom and was clean, so that was pleasant. The decor is really nice also, I enjoyed that. As I said not sure is worth the higher price considering the other places around.

A lovely café, the food is great and so are the staff. Brilliant with allergies and intolerances. Highly recommend. Side salad was just rocket, portions could be a little larger but overall great.

Lovely experience going here for coffee and brunch. Service was fantastic. Food was excellent and coffee was delicious. While slightly on the expensive side, the quality is high and I think I’ve convinced myself it was worth it. They also handled an allergy without issue and with confidence which was great. Get the grilled cheese and some hash browns! I’d love to have more rosemary salt on the hash browns and much more kick to the chilli mayo and the jam however. Otherwise a perfect experience (and dog friendly to boot)!

Cosy, bustling cafe in the centre of Hitchin. It's often quite busy and there may not be seats-- it is clearly very popular. The menu had interesting unique dishes as well as brunch classics. The coffee was decent -- they stock Allpress coffees and have a guest coffee on, too. Service was timely and the food was really good. My partner had the avocado toast and I had poached pear French toast. I did enjoy my food but the pears were barely poached- they were still quite tough. Additionally the sauce that came with the avocado toast was a bit excessive. Otherwise it was really good food, though. Would definitely come again. Nice spot.

It was cute but I’m not sure I would go again. Coffee was sour and unpleasant - I had a cortado and somehow my wife’s black decaf coffee was on point . The server did help us get gluten free but as she put through the order she rushed to the kitchen as she ‘forgot to put it in the ticket’ - didn’t give us the most confidence about the allergy was taken seriously, especially having a nut allergy too. Granola was delicious, hash brown bites were amazing, the sandwich was dry but that’s all gf bread… It was average for top London prices.

Went with my wife for a treat lunch and the food is incredible! We both had the eggs Benedict with smoked streaky bacon and shared some rosemary salted hash browns. The hollandaise on the eggs Benedict was silky and delicious and the poached eggs were cooked perfectly! The star of the show however is definitely the hashbrowns, they are like a hybrid tater tot-hash brown, super crunchy shelf and soft fluffy centre, not overly seasoned, 100% moreish! I had a flat white and the coffe is excellent! Definitely know their stuff!

Very chill vibes, great aesthetic and amazing banana bread. Staff are on the verge of being too attentive but definitely will be coming again to sample more of the menu.

I recently moved from London to central Bedfordshire and came across this gorgeous space where the service, the staff, the food is fantastic and delight! It’s my second visit and probably a regular place to visit for good quality food and coffee. I highly recommend this place
