The Groundworks menu

Introducing The Groundworks Restaurant feels a bit like letting you in on a local secret, even though plenty of people already swear by it. The Groundworks sits right in the heart of Hitchin at 1 Churchyard, Hitchin SG5 1HR, United Kingdom, and it carries the relaxed, welcoming energy you hope for when you step into a great cafe. From the moment you arrive, the atmosphere is easygoing and social, making it just as suitable for a quiet coffee break as it is for a casual catch-up with friends. There is outdoor seating for those who like to watch the town go by, while inside feels warm and comfortable without trying too hard. What really stands out about The Groundworks is how naturally it fits into your day. You can pop in for a quick bite, settle down for a proper dine-in experience, or grab something tasty to go if you are on the move. Coffee plays a big role here, and it is treated with care, which regulars definitely appreciate. Alongside that, the menu leans into fresh, thoughtful food, with healthy options that do not feel boring or restrictive. Vegan and vegetarian choices are clearly part of the conversation, not an afterthought, and the small plates make it easy to sample a few different flavours without committing to one big dish. As the day rolls on, alcohol and wine come into play, shifting the mood from daytime cafe to relaxed evening spot without losing that friendly feel. The Groundworks manages to balance quality and comfort in a way that feels natural rather than forced, which is probably why it appeals to such a broad mix of locals and visitors. Whether you are meeting someone new, working through ideas with a laptop nearby, or simply enjoying good food and drink in a pleasant setting, this is the kind of place that quietly earns a spot in your regular rotation.
